Civil Disobedience: Sunday, January 15, 2017, 12:30-2:30pm

martin-luther-king-jr-SmJoin local historians and Walden park staff for the 23rd annual program to commemorate Martin Luther King Day, and the legacy of Thoreau’s essay, Civil Disobedience, at Walden Pond.

12:30pm-2:30pm Visit with Henry David Thoreau, portrayed by historian Richard Smith, at the Thoreau house replica near the main parking lot. Ask Mr. Thoreau about the night he spent in jail in 1846 for not paying his poll tax, an act which inspired his influential essay.

1:00pm Thoreau Scholar, Tom Blanding, will lead an engaging discussion on the writing of Thoreau’s essay, Civil Disobedience, at the new solar-powered Walden Pond Visitor Center. Learn how Martin Luther King Jr., having read Thoreau’s essay, used the concept of civil disobedience during the Civil Rights movement. Additional examples of civil disobedience, both historic and current, will be brought out during the discussion.

Henry Thoreau was known to have grown the sweetest, juiciest watermelons in Concord. Every year, he shared his harvest with friends and family. As we continue this tradition, enjoy a slice of melon with historian Richard Smith who will portray Thoreau at the Thoreau house replica. The replica is located next to the parking lot. The Year of Low Water: Plant Ecology of Walden Pond’s Shore, Saturday, September 10, 2016, 1:00pm-3:00pm

Join world-renowned biologist Richard Primack for a walk from the Thoreau House Replica to Thoreau’s cove. Henry David Thoreau kept extensive records of plant flowering and leaf-out times. Dr. Primack uses Walden Pond as a living laboratory, comparing current conditions with Thoreau’s records and documenting that the climate around Walden Pond is changing. Dr. Primack will discuss the ecological consequences of these changes, as well as the plant successions taking place during the current low-water levels at Walden.

Join a park interpreter at the Thoreau house replica and the original Thoreau house site for fun and informative learning about Henry David Thoreau’s life and his stay at Walden Pond. Please refer to a Walden Pond State Reservation trail map, available at kiosks, for these locations.

The reservation often closes due to reaching visitor capacity on hot summer days, holidays, and weekends; visitors are strongly encouraged to call the park headquarters (978.369.3254) and listen to the voice message regarding whether parking capacity has been reached prior to visiting or attending a program.

Join a Park Interpreter for a 1-1/2 hour saunter along Walden Pond State Reservation’s trails. We will explore Walden’s landscape as the calendar moves toward summer. Since 1997, over 400 area children have participated in the Walden Pond Junior Ranger program. The program introduces children to the outdoors, the ideas of Henry David Thoreau, creates friendships, and brings families together. Activities include hiking, natural history, wildlife and tree identification, ponding, journaling, and cultural history.

All children must be accompanied by an adult. The Junior Ranger program is a free program open to the public, sponsored by DCR and the Thoreau Society’s Friends of Walden Pond. The program is limited to 12 children per session; places are filled on a first come, first served basis.
